New visa for parents of Australian migrants to be available in 2019

New temporary sponsored parent visa in 2019

The much anticipated new temporary sponsored parent visa is scheduled to be available in the first half of 2019. This week, Federal Government passed the necessary legislation for the visa to be introduced early next year.

Immigration Minister David Coleman said:

This new visa will help families reunite and spend time together. It will provide a new pathway for parents and grandparents to visit their families in Australia, which will deliver great social benefits to the Australian community.”

Visa fees

The visa is expected to come with a hefty price tag of $5,000 for a three year visa or $10,000 for a five year visa, with opportunity for a single renewal at the same price.

Sponsor requirements

The visa is also expected to be a sponsored visa, meaning that a migrant family member will need to act as a financial guarantor and be required to pay any public health debts the parent may incur. The sponsor will need to be approved before the parents can apply for the visa.

The proposed visa may also be limited to one set of parents per household.

When the new visa is announced, we will advise the exact details of the visa criteria. Until then, if you need assistance with any visa or migration issue, please ask us.
